HAIR MYTHS
By
Mike Mahoney
Hair
loss due to clogged pores and clogged follicles
Many of the 20th century hair products aimed at helping thinning
hair were based on the theory of clogged pores and follicles. Some such
products are still around today.
Medical
experts say that hairs grow with such force that they can penetrate
intact skin, never mind oily residues in follicles. One only needs to
use common sense.
Poor
diet
A normal consumption of protein and vitamins are included in almost
everyone's daily diet. Contrary to popular opinions, diet has nothing to
do with androgenetic alopecia (male or female pattern baldness). Case
studies of World War II concentration camp victims who were dying from
starvation had no increased hair loss.
Shaving
the head prevents baldness
In some cultures, women still shave male children in the belief that
shaving the head will prevent baldness. The illusion of more hair is
felt but not seen with the shaving of the scalp. It is a myth that
shaving has any credible evidence of effectiveness in avoiding hair
loss.
Baldness
is predominantly a man's problem
Take the total of balding men in the world and reduce it by
one-third and you have the approximate number of women with thinning
hair.
MYTHS THAT UPSET BALD
PEOPLE
By
Esther Friedman
What seems
to bring out the worst in people when it comes to baldness? It is the
importance society places on appearance and youthful image. Baldness
connotes unattractiveness, physical weakness and old age in our
image-oriented society.
How
often does Hollywood cast a bald man or woman as the hero? When is the
last time you saw a bald television star? In the bible, Sampson’s
strength is attributed to his hair. In England, judges and lawyers still
wear wigs to signify power.
Research
revealed that the person with full head of hair was rated as most
handsome, strong, and attractive. The person with a balding head of hair
was rated weak, dull, and unattractive. Studies show employment
discrimination based on a person's appearance. A man with full head of
hair will get the job that a bald person was just refused, both with the
same qualifications. Since hair loss is a sign of age and weakness
people with baldness do not get the opportunity in some companies who
wish to promote a youthful image and strength.
Baldness
evokes feelings of vulnerability, loss of self-esteem, embarrassment of
self-image. Single men and women who had begun losing hair in their
early twenties are more likely to suffer from an extremely low
self-esteem. They feel less attractive than others by looking older than
their actual age. Balding men reported glancing in the mirror constantly
and wearing hats even in warm weather.
Many feel
self-conscious and worry constantly that others are looking at them. A
low self-esteem stems from individual's own perception of what a
beautiful body image should be, all due to our society expectation of
beauty and power.
